Falling

So you're probably wondering - What does Peter Gabriel or Afro Celt Sound System have to do with The Spirits Within?  They didn't work on it, did they?  Hey, wait a tic... are you trying to sneakily sway us into the Peter Gabriel following without our noticing?

Well, in contrary order: Not really; Not that I know of; My alias is taken from a Peter Gabriel alb... oh, that's not what you meant, is it?  Well, I can't be sure, but to cement your curiosity before going any further, I present you with this quote, which should give you a pretty good idea:

"What is that...thing, at the center of the earth?  Did Falling Guy stumble upon Hell?  Purgatory?  the Ancient D'ni civilization?  The Solsbury Hill annual staff party?  Coincidentally, we did book the center of the earth for this year's Summer Outing..."
Okay.  The video starts sembla-silently... the first sound is the wind at high speed as we see an eye.  Then we see this guy falling through the upper atmosphere (Henceforth, Falling Guy, as the folk at Solsbury Hill dubbed him).  The music is on - if you're familiar with the newer Peter Gabriel sound then you know it - the sort of rhythmic (or neo-primordial?) beat that I'm have trouble describing.  And Gabriel starts singing, and is soon joined by other voices (Afro Celt Sound System, I presume).

The song isn't very important to this.  It's a good song, and I have it sort of fused with TSW due to the lyrics (sort of Jane-Neil reminiscent in that area, I feel).  But I fuse a lot of songs to TSW, so I digress.

So this fellow falls.  And falls and falls and falls very close past the nose of a jet (Peter is the pilot and looks confused at this strange man who just went by, as does his copilot).

Anyway, the Falling Guy keeps falling... falling towards a city... towards a city... past a very tall building (oddly enough, in a slower timespan than he had made the decent through the miles above).  Past a secretary woman by an open window, and his velocity causes a breeze that sends the stack of papers she's holding to go flying.  Past Peter, again, as he's looking out a window.  Down towards the sidewalk, he can now see a bunch of people walking to and fro in their daily lives.  Including Peter, yet again.

So Falling Guy is falling, so what?  Well, we're coming to the interesting part.  So hold on.

Now, we may expect one who's fallin' from such a height to splat when he hits the ground.  Instead, he falls through the pavement, leaving a cartoonish hole in the cement, and into a cavernous underworld.  Now, here's where it gets interesting.

As he falls through this underworld, he looks down to see an amorphous blue mass, a sphere, at what I presume to be the Earth's core.  So there's this blue mass at the center of the Earth, and as he gets closer, we see it's made up of blue, slightly blurred people.

Falling Guy falls into the mass, making a bit of a bloop (not the sound, but if you can imagine what making the sound looks like).  He falls through it, eventually coming out the other side with a kind of splash....

Then he falls back through the underworld, and out the other side of the planet (the Serengeti, it would appear).  He falls back into the atmosphere, and out into space.

As you might guess, it's that blue mass at the center of the Earth I'm interested in.  It's probably just a coincidence, but I still thought it was kind of cool.

Where can you see it?  I found it on a filesharing network while hunting music videos, but apparently it's a bonus to the single of the same song (along with other remixes).  You can also view it at Afro Celt Sound System's official site, here.  For a broader look at the video from a different angle check out Solsbury Hill.
